Four players Manchester United should scout at 2019 Africa Cup of Nations
Manchester United are still looking to improve a number of positions in the transfer market as the start of pre-season approaches – and they might have a chance to see some options in action this summer.
Daniel James is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s only signing of the transfer window so far, with a centre-back, full-back, midfielder and forward still thought to be on the shopping list.
That’s before the futures of existing players are resolved, as the likes of Paul Pogba, David De Gea, Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku continue to be linked with transfers out of the club.
So with the need to find new players paramount, Solskjaer might have one eye on the Africa Cup of Nations, which kicked off this weekend.
United and Solskjaer will have had their targets established for some time, but seeing players in action on the big stage is always a useful indicator as to their suitability for playing at United.
Here, we look at some names featuring at AFCON 2019 who have been linked with United in the past:
Kalidou Koulibaly – Senegal
Probably the player United would be most interested in at the tournament, Koulibaly is strongly linked with the club.
A big price tag at Napoli might put United off, but there is no doubting his quality. A strong showing for Senegal might persuade the club he is worth the money.
Nicolas Pepe – Ivory Coast
A winger who has grabbed the attention of a number of Premier League clubs if reports are to be believed, including Liverpool and Tottenham.
Like Koulibaly, Pepe might force himself back into United’s plans if he can perform for Ivory Coast in Egypt – but he could also increase his price tag at the same time. United must be careful.
Hakim Ziyech – Morocco
The Ajax man can increase his stock after a fine campaign in the Champions League this season.
United would have to persuade him to drop into the Europa League, but with Ajax’s squad being picked apart, they could persuade him to join another project.
Andre Onana – Cameroon
One of the contenders to replace David de Gea should the Spaniard leave this summer, Onana is another of Ajax’s Champions League stars.
United would only be interested should De Gea’s situation change, however, and the club are not looking to sell their number one this summer.
