Rangers boss Steven Gerrard delivers warning to his players after Celtic claims | Football | Sport
Rangers will go into the new Premiership season with a sense of optimism after they secured the signing of their main transfer target Joe Aribo.
Steven Gerrard has admitted that the Gers are in desperate need to win some silverware next season after missing out in his debut campaign.
However, Gerrard has been forced to calm his players down after several squad members sent warnings to their old rivals Celtic.
Although Rangers beat Celtic twice last season and had a positive run of results toward the end of their Premiership campaign, the Hoops have won each of the last eight league titles and nine domestic trophies in a row.
Gerrard said: “We can’t not win anything this season, that’s the reality.
“But I think players should be careful what they say.”
Utility man Andy Halliday has claimed that Rangers are ready to stop Celtic’s incredible run of league title triumphs, while new boy George Edmundson outlined his desire to taste instant success at Ibrox.
Gerrard continued by praising the confidence of his players, but asking them to remain composed.
He added: “I don’t mind people that are confident and ambitious.
“But, for me, it’s important the players understand that it’s the easy part doing interviews and saying we’ve got to do this or that.
“They’ve got to go and prove it on a football pitch consistently.
“Last year, we weren’t consistent enough in the league and cups. And you’ve also got to do it with a level of discipline to help yourself.
“If we find those two key ingredients, then we’ll be a tough nut to crack this season.”
Celtic boss Neil Lennon will be disappointed that he missed out on former Charlton midfielder Aribo, and has admitted that bringing in quality players is far from a simple task.
He said: “It is an ongoing quest and it is hard. I’m talking about the market value of players and these deals change day by day.
“Deals will get done, there is no question of that. It is just about getting the right ones at the right price, and at the right quality.”
