Liverpool player ratings: One star nabs a 9 as Reds beat Chelsea to Super Cup glory | Football | Sport
Olivier Giroud opened his Chelsea account for the season to hand the Blues a first-half lead before Sadio Mane equalised seconds after the second half started.
Liverpool nearly took the lead on multiple ocassions during the second period but the game went into extra time.
And it was Mane again who notched for Liverpool, slamming home from 12 yards after Roberto Firmino pulled the ball back for him.
But Jorginho managed to slot hom a penalty after Adrian fouled Tammy Abraham in the box to send the game to penalties where back-up goalkeeper Adrian was the hero for the Merseyside club.
Here are Express Sport’s Liverpool player ratings:
There was a reason why he could not get a game at West Ham and he seemed to drain confidence from his defenders. But he was the hero on the night, saving the decisive spot kick.
Consistency is the key. It was a stern test against Christian Pulisic and he did well but there were some clumsier moments.
His 100th appearance for Liverpool was a solid enough one and he certainly improved as the game went on.
VAN DIJK 7
Struggled to cope as the rest of his defence looked shaky under pressure from the start but held it together.
Perhaps not as influential going forward as he might have liked but performed his defensive duties stoutly.
Always reassuring to see him in the No 7 shirt but was fighting a lone battle in poor first half for Liverpool. Subbed early.
Showed excellent leadership again to lift Liverpool up in the second half and lift another European trophy.
Some excellent passes – not least for the equaliser – and picked things up finally after a wasteful opening period. Scored his penalty despite struggling with cramp.
A disappointingly anonymous first-half display from the England international. Replaced by Firmino at half-time.
Buzzed around in lively fashion as he always does and scored twice for the Reds.
Found himself some amazing chances as always but for once seemed to want to over-complicate things.
(for Oxlade-Chamberlain 45) Immediate impact with huge part in the equaliser.
(for Milner 64) Saw things through after Milner tired.
