Liverpool news: Sadio Mane wants transfer after call with Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane | Football | Sport

Liverpool were inactive in the summer transfer window, opting mainly to go with continuity for the new campaign.

Adrian was the only acquisition expected to be heavily involved in the first team this season, and has already been drafted into the starting line-up following Alisson’s injury on the opening day of the season.

The focus for Liverpool now will be keeping their star players as they look to build on their Champions League win last year and once again mount a serious challenge in the Premier League.

Liverpool have had to deal with seeing their big stars push for a transfer away from the club in years gone by when seeming on the cusp of achieving something great.

Fernando Torres, Luis Suarez, Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho all pushed through big-money moves away from Liverpool previously.

Now, the Reds have a host of world class stars attracting interest from some of Europe’s biggest teams.

And according to French publication Soccer Link, Real Madrid have made their interest in signing Mane very clear.

The report states Zidane phoned Mane to discuss a potential move to the Bernabeu earlier this summer, and it seemingly had a big effect on the Senegal international.

It is said Mane has been convinced of joining Madrid.

But the report adds that Real president Florentino Perez wasn’t completely sold on making a move for Mane having already signed Eden Hazard.

Given Mane’s importance to Liverpool’s title aspirations for this season and beyond it would likely take a gigantic bid for them to consider selling.

The 27-year-old only returned from international duty last month having taken part in the Africa Cup of Nations final.

He wasn’t in the squad to face Norwich in Liverpool’s Premier League opener, but he wasn’t missed as the reigning European champions put four past the newly promoted side.

Divock Origi benefitted from Mane’s absence and the Belgium international found the net along with Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

Origi is expected to be handed even more game time this season after impressing in a back-up role last year.

He scored two crucial goals in the infamous 4-0 win over Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final as well as finding the net in the final.
