Why Chelsea were better against Liverpool in Super Cup than vs Man Utd | Football | Sport

Life under Frank Lampard started badly for Chelsea as they suffered a heavy 4-0 Premier League defeat at Manchester United on Sunday.

The scoreline was flattering for the Red Devils after the Blues dominated large parts of the first half.

Chelsea were quickly back into action on Wednesday in the UEFA Super Cup against Liverpool in Istanbul.

Lampard’s side led 1-0 at half time thanks to a well-worked Olivier Giroud goal.

And Cole explained the difference in the last two performances.

“Against Manchester United I felt there was a bit of anxiety within the team,” Cole said on BT Sport.

“They wanted to play on the front foot and there was a lot of pressing that maybe they didn’t need to do.

“Tonight they’ve got into a low to medium block, there’s no space between the lines and they’re using triggers to get on and press.

“They’re winning the balls and when they’re winning it, the biggest difference I feel, is they’re winning it and breaking with [Christian] Pulisic and Pedro and [Olivier] Giroud into some great positions.

“They’re showing Liverpool a lot of respect and they’re waiting for the mistakes.”

Former Chelsea manager Hoddle was impressed with the change from Lampard three days after the United defeat.

“Chelsea are playing like they’re playing away from home against a side in their own stadium and that’s how he’s set up,” Hoddle said.

“I think he’s learned a lot from Old Trafford, I think they got it wrong at Old Trafford where they were pressing too high.

“It’s easier for them to keep that going for 90 minutes because you’re conserving energy.

“It’s now up to Liverpool to open Chelsea up.

“But they’ve blocked that three in midfield, played across the pitch, and at the right moment they’ve gone and pressed.

“They’ve been very impressive doing it, Chelsea have been excellent.”
