Real Madrid player ratings vs PSG: Bale defiant, Courtois caught out, three players get 4s | Football | Sport
Real Madrid player ratings: Gareth Bale almost scored a sublime goal against PSG
Real Madrid slumped to a 3-0 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain as Zinedine Zidane’s side put in a dreadful performance away from home.
Former Los Blancos star Angel di Maria was in superb form, opening the scoring with a clever finish past Thibaut Courtois before doubling his tally with a long-range strike.
Gareth Bale had a stunning goal ruled out for handball while Karim Benzema also saw an effort disallowed before Thomas Meunier added gloss to the scoreline by finishing off a brilliant counter-attack in injury time.
Express Sport have rated how the Real Madrid players performed during their clash with Paris Saint-Germain – but do you agree?
Real Madrid player ratings vs Paris Saint-Germain – Champions League
GK: Thibaut Courtois – 5
Arguably could have done more for the opener when he was beaten at his near post, then was left grasping at thin air for the Argentine’s second.
Finally hung out to dry by his defence for the third as Real pushed forward and didn’t make a save of note.
RB: Dani Carvajal – 4
Looked off the pace all night, going in the book for wrestling with Mauro Icardi and struggled to keep tabs on a rampant Di Maria.
Real Madrid player ratings: Los Blancos were poor without the suspended Sergio Ramos and Nacho
CB: Raphael Varane – 4
Needed to step up in the absence of Sergio Ramos but didn’t provide much leadership and was guilty of playing Bernat on side for the third.
CB: Eder Militao – 5
Had a busy evening, surviving a penalty shout in the opening seconds before putting in a good block on Idrissa Gueye but was then caught on his toes for Di Maria’s first.
Part of a defence that got ripped to shreds and this will serve as a steep learning curve for the 21-year-old.
LB: Ferland Mendy – 6
Followed through on Di Maria with one forceful challenge and was lucky to avoid a booking but showed his talent with some wonderful early defending, getting across to shepherd Pablo Sarabia away from goal when danger threatened.
Real Madrid player ratings: Gareth Bale had a stunning goal ruled out for handball
CM: Casemiro – 7
Fought fires all evening, scurrying around to try and stem the flow of PSG attacks with numerous tackles and blocks.
Maintained his entry levels throughout and can be happy with his individual display in a losing cause.
CM: James Rodriguez – 4
A really poor evening for the Colombian, who struggled to have any impact as PSG hassled him out of the match.
Anonymous before he was hooked with 20 minutes remaining.
CM: Toni Kroos – 5
A frustrating evening for the German midfielder, who’s usual metronomic passing was less than perfect.
Starting to look something of a liability when out of possession and was lucky to avoid a booking for a rash challenge on Sarabia.
Real Madrid player ratings: Karim Benzema had another effort chalked off by the linesman
RAM: Gareth Bale – 8
Real’s stand-out player, with the Welshman providing impetus and intent that was sorely lacking among his team-mates.
Went close with a free-kick before scoring a wonderful lob that was subsequently ruled out for handball in the build up.
Immediately fired another effort just over and fizzed another strike just past the post as he single-handedly tried to drag his side into the match.
LAM: Eden Hazard – 6
Got some hefty treatment from the PSG rearguard but looked sharp, despite having played limited football in recent weeks.
Went close with a turn and shot before showing off his drilling skills with a fantastic run shortly after the break but never found space to test Keylor Navas.
ST: Karim Benzema – 6
Showed his quality with a clinical finish, only for it to be ruled out when Lucas Vazquez strayed offside.
Then went close with header when he really should have scored.
Real Madrid player ratings: Do you agree with our scores for the Los Blancos players against PSG?
SUB: Lucas Vazquez (on for Hazard, 69 mins) – 4
His first contribution was to get in the way, standing in an offside position and causing Benzema’s strike to be chalked off.
SUB: Luka Jovic (on for Rodriguez, 69 mins) – 5
Barely got any service.
SUB: Vinicius Junior (on for Bale, 78 mins) – 4
Caused a ruckus with his late challenge on Bernat.
