Man City news: Rodri explains why it’s now more important to beat Liverpool than Man Utd | Football | Sport
Manchester City midfielder Rodri says Liverpool are now “the team to beat” over local rivals Manchester United.
City edged Liverpool to the Premier League trophy last season by one point in an enthrallingly high-level title race.
The Citizens have lost ground on Jurgen Klopp’s side this year, though, trailing them by eight points after as many games.
City’s arch rivals Manchester United, meanwhile, are languishing in 12th with even top four looking out of reach already.
Pep Guardiola’s side still have their first tests against Liverpool and United to come in November and December respectively.
Rodri has faced neither side in the league before having signed from Atletico Madrid in the summer.
But the holding midfielder feels as if Liverpool may now trigger the more passionate atmosphere from fans.
“I don’t know, I had never been in the city before; I don’t know how people in the city feel,” the Spaniard told ESPN.
“But the team to beat is Liverpool now, and that has been seen the last two seasons.”
Liverpool have made the Champions League final the last two years, losing to Real Madrid in 2018 but comfortably beating Tottenham 2-0 last year.
“They’re a great team, they have improved a lot of things,” Rodri added.
“They’re a very good team, and [by results] they’re the best team in England and in Europe.
“They’re the champions of Europe, so everyone wants to beat them, not just us.”
